Conjugate Addition Reaction || Cylden Organic Chemistry Chapter 22 part 1||CSIR NET / JRF Chemistry
in last chapter we read about electrophilic aromatic substitution reaction.
now we are starting conjugate addition reaction.
An enone, also called an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl, is a type of organic compound consisting of an alkene conjugated to a ketone.
There is possibility of 1,2 or 1,4 addition which is called as michel addition.
The Michael reaction or Michael addition is the nucleophilic addition of a carbanion or another nucleophile[1][2] to an α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compound containing an electron withdrawing group. It belongs to the larger class of conjugate additions. This is one of the most useful methods for the mild formation of C–C bonds.
Whether 1,2 or 1,4-addition occurs depends on multiple variables but mostly it is determined by the nature of the nucleophile.
